My final year of university major project looked at theatre design for the well known, french musical 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' based off Victor Hugo's 1831 original novel.
This project was close to my heart, being set in France, where I frequently visited in my childhood to see my grandparents as well as all of the fabric materials used, coming from my grandmother's stash of continental scarves collected from her travels over her lifetime.
For a script that explored so many potentially dark themes such as racism, discrimination, sexism or religion, it was a challenge to work with. However, it was a challenge I accepted gladly in order to be as representative as possible on stage. It was this that lead to me cast TWO ACTORS for the same role.
Many people don't know that the main character, Quasimodo is deaf, but who wouldn't be after spending 20 years ringing the bells of the Notre Dame? My design for Quasimodo features one deaf actors who signs the play, and one hearing actor who sings and together they create the character.
I explored many areas of theatre design within this project:
- In-depth Research
- Concept Art
- Set Design
- Technical drawing (3D and 2D)
- Model Making in 1:25 scale
- Lighting Design
- Character and Costume Design
- The Theatre Green Book
- Budgeting
- Scheduling
To promote a sense of creativity and community at our graduation showcase, I curated an interactive 'Doodle Wall' where students, lecturers and friends could all leave their mark. A simple white wall was soon transformed into a black and white work of art which highlighted the individuality of every visitor, leaving a stream of smiles in their wake.
